While He Pummeled Me With Tiny Fists

I thought, "This boy needs his grandfathers."

Phill's father was a Quaker who still served in the Navy as a corpsman. He could have taught my son when not to fight.

My father, a Marine, would have shown my son how to win the fights he entered.

Thoughts such as these cause the ache in my heart to grow. Some people can never be replaced.

HP- did your parents go to the Marine Corps Birthday Ball when you were a youngster?

They did, although my memories are fuzzy.

I more remember babysitting kids of a major and his wife while they went to the ball. He wore a t-shirt, shorts, and flip flops to drive to the base so his uniform wouldn't get creases.

Is your daughter going?
